Thanksgiving Books
One Little, Two Little, Three Little Pilgrims by B.G. HennessyI love this book and consider it a true improvement on the song that I grew up singing with my grandmother. The song that I grew up singing is an extreme simplification and rather un “PC”. However, this gem of a book takes an old song children truly enjoy and adds a thick layer of solid factual information that can transform your music classroom into a history class. The illustrations are wonderful and offer a very nice depiction of life during this important era in our history. |

Over the River and Through the Wood by Lydia Maria ChildStylistically this book is truly beautiful and the illustrations offer a wonderful depiction of life in a by-gone era. The pictures of a sleigh, of children sledding and of people ice sailing offer my students in Texas a picture of life that they can hardly imagine. My only complaint about this book is that there are so many wonderful illustrations, you can’t really sing the book AND look at the pictures at the same time because the song moves to fast for the book. When you have to turn pages for every musical phrase, it’s hard to get the full impact of the beautiful pictures. However, it’s worth it to slow down and really enjoy a slow retelling of this great song. |
